  • 2 tbsp olive oil, divided
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 tsp salt, divided
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 2 tsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato puree
  • 1 can (15 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 1/2 cups cooked white rice
  • 1/2 large green cabbage (or 1 small), cored and chopped
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1. Prepare the Sauce:

  • Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add diced onion and cook for 5 minutes. Season with 1 tsp salt and black pepper.
  • Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add ground beef and cook until browned.
  • Mix in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, tomato puree, and diced tomatoes. Simmer for 15–20 minutes.
  • Stir in cooked rice and set aside.

2. Cook the Cabbage:

  • Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Add chopped cabbage and cook for 5–7 minutes until softened. Season with remaining 1 tsp salt.

3. Assemble the Casserole:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease a baking dish. Spread 1/3 of the beef mixture at the bottom, layer with 1/2 of the cabbage, and repeat. Top with remaining beef mixture.

4. Bake the Casserole:

  • Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  • Remove foil, sprinkle mozzarella cheese on top, and bake uncovered for 10–15 more minutes until bubbly and golden.

5. Serve & Enjoy!

  • Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving.
