Description

A rich, creamy, and velvety homemade hot chocolate made on the stovetop—perfect for cozy winter days and indulgent sipping.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups (950 ml) whole milk
  • 1/4 cup (25 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt
  • Whipped cream or marshmallows, for topping

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, water, and a pinch of salt over medium heat. Stir until the mixture is smooth and begins to simmer.
  2. Slowly pour in the milk, whisking constantly to combine. Heat the mixture over medium heat until it is steaming, but do not let it boil.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Pour the hot chocolate into mugs and top with whipped cream or marshmallows, if desired.
  5. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

  • Do not let the hot chocolate boil to avoid curdling or scalding the milk.
  • For a richer flavor, substitute whole milk with half-and-half or add a splash of heavy cream.
  • Customize the toppings with chocolate shavings or a sprinkle of cinnamon for added indulgence.
