Description

This classic comfort food features juicy hamburger steaks smothered in a savory onion gravy, making for a perfect dinner that is both hearty and satisfying.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  2. Form the mixture into 4 to 6 patties, depending on your preferred size.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and cook for about 3-4 minutes, or until softened.
  5. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and cook for an additional minute, stirring constantly.
  6. Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps. Add the soy sauce, thyme, and onion powder. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 3-4 minutes, or until the gravy thickens.
  7. Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet and spoon the gravy over the top. Let everything simmer together for 5-7 minutes to meld the flavors.
  8. Serve the hamburger steaks with the onion gravy on top, paired with mashed potatoes or vegetables.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free version, replace bread crumbs with gluten-free bread crumbs and soy sauce with tamari or coconut aminos.
  • This dish pairs well with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
  • You can customize the seasoning to suit your personal taste preferences.
