Description

French Onion Meatloaf is a delicious twist on the classic comfort food, infusing the rich, savory flavors of French onion soup. Caramelized onions, melted Gruyère cheese, and a touch of French onion soup mix bring comfort and depth to every bite. Perfect for cozy family dinners or special occasions, this meatloaf is easy to make and sure to become a favorite.

Ingredients

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef (preferably a mix of lean and fatty)
  • 2 medium onions, sliced
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (plain or Italian)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 packet French onion soup mix
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until golden brown and caramelized, stirring occasionally (about 15-20 minutes). Reserve a portion of the onions for topping.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, caramelized onions (reserving some for topping), breadcrumbs, beef broth, egg, and French onion soup mix. Mix gently until just combined to avoid overworking the meat.
  4. Shape the mixture into a loaf and place it in a greased loaf pan or on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  5. Create a small well in the center of the loaf and sprinkle in half the shredded cheese. Cover with the remaining cheese and the reserved caramelized onions.
  6. Bake for 1 hour, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (70°C).
  7. Remove from the oven and let the meatloaf rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve warm.

Notes

  • Vegetarian Option: Replace the ground beef with plant-based meat or a mix of lentils, mushrooms, and breadcrumbs for a vegetarian version.
  • Cheese Options: Gruyère is recommended, but Swiss, mozzarella, or cheddar are also great alternatives.
  • Add Veggies: Consider adding finely chopped bell peppers or mushrooms for added nutrition and flavor.
  • Spicy Twist: Add cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper flakes for a little heat.
